I grew up in the countryside around Worcester where I gained 13 GCSEs: 7A*s and 6As. I then completed my A Levels in Physics, Maths, Further Maths, and Critical Thinking and achieved AA*AA* respectively. From this, I knew I had a deep interest not only in Physics as a tool, but in the philosophical study of Physics as a concept. Hence, I attended Durham University where I studied Physics and Philosophy with a year abroad spent at the University of Tokyo. Knowing I wished to bring out a similar passion for Physics in other students, I then completed my PGCE at University College London. I subsequently went on to study for my Masters degree at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Presently, I am working on a PhD in the Philosophy of Astrobiology at Durham University.

I really strive to integrate real-world applications and implications to the subject matter covered in the Physics and Maths syllabus. It is not infrequent for students to feel out of touch with these subjects, but Physics, and the language of such (Maths), represent our best understanding of the world. So – and I may be biased – they can be the most relevant and fascinating subjects, when taught in an accessible and engaging way. For this reason, I encourage students to link study material to real-world concepts and to think about the wider context. This approach, alongside nurturing a genuine interest in the subject, leads to the attainment of higher grades through a deeper understanding of the content.

Confidence boosting is also a key approach in my style of tutoring. Students can often achieve more than they expect if they have the right tools. I am very encouraging and supportive, and I know the importance of moving at the right pace for each individual student. What is more, guiding a student to arrive at the answer themselves (by providing appropriate scaffolding) is much more rewarding and engaging for the student. It also instils on the student a long-term ability to learn effectively. Learning how to learn is a skill too often overlooked!

Finally, I find that students often enjoy and thrive in an interactive environment. I therefore integrate methods of online learning into my lessons plans, whether this be through educational apps or simply the use of a jazzed-up PowerPoint! This often gives students the opportunity for active learning and helps to keep students engaged.

Alongside my enthusiasm for tutoring, I love staying active. I am an avid rock climber and would love to see Yosemite National Park from high up! Additionally, I recently gained an interest in calisthenics which is a new and challenging experience. I also gain great enjoyment and tranquillity in hiking – particularly when exploring different countries this way. My favourite adventure to date has been climbing Mount Fuji for the sunrise.

I also have a love of learning generally and this has led me to undertake a PhD in the Philosophy of Astrobiology at Durham University. I am really enjoying the opportunity to learn and contribute to academia in this way.
