Julia

Julia is a highly experienced teacher, who was Head of Classics at a top London prep school for over 10 years before joining Keystone. She teaches English, French, Latin and Greek. Julia has a patient and nurturing approach, which allows her students to gain confidence in their studies.

As a teacher, I have been Head of Classics at Notting Hill Prep between 2008-2015, and from 2018-2024. As well as teaching Latin to years 5-8 and Greek to years 7-8, I run creative writing club throughout the year and run preparation classes for St Paul's Girls' candidates, focusing on the general comprehension. I have been tutoring since 2005, working with children from the age of seven to eighteen, although the majority of my work centres around the 11+, 13+ Common Entrance and GCSE. I often work with several children from the same family over many years.

Biography

I graduated from UCL with a First in Classics in 2004. After a year working in publishing, I then worked freelance as a tutor while also playing and recording music with my band Second Person. In September 2008, I joined Notting Hill Prep as Head of Classics, concurrently tutoring in the evenings and on the weekends. I also did an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck and a PG Cert in Children's Literature between 2011 and 2014, for which I received a distinction. I left teaching in September 2015 when my son was born and returned to my job in September 2018 when he turned three. Since 2016, I have been a published author of three YA novels, as well as picture books and adult books for the publisher Wonderbly.

Approach to Tutoring

My approach to tutoring is sympathic and collaborative. I believe in building a strong rapport with students, establishing clear goals from the outset, and then working together to achieve those goals. I also believe that tutoring is far more than preparing for an exam - it can be an opportunity to develop positive working practices and to foster a real love of learning.

When not tutoring

When I am not tutoring I am mostly writing and researching new book ideas both for myself and for the publisher Wonderbly, which I do two days a week (usually Tuesday and Thursday). I love cooking, reading, visiting museums and going on long walks with our lab-collie cross, Lila.
