I began tutoring pro-bono five years ago for a charity “the rendezvous” in my home county. I noticed my affinity for it and the sense of fulfilment I gained when I successfully used my well-honed communication skills to engage a pupil and see progress. One pupil I worked with struggled with English due to her dyslexia. I held weekly lessons throughout the year helping her find tools to help her with her dyslexia, which had held her back throughout her primary and secondary education. This pupil started with no English qualifications, I managed to build her confidence with grammar, punctuation as well as reading and writing and eventually she passed her necessary English exam to allow her to enter the world of work.
During the pandemic, I then went on to work as a TA at Thomas’s London Day schools, Kensington. I went on to lead the year 4 class as part of Thomas’s Kensington’s then head teacher Joanna Ebner’s “school unlocked” summer school. I planned and delivered lessons in the core subjects as well as staging a play for the pupils to perform in. It was during this important work with pupil premium children who missed out on face-to-face education that I decided to pursue gaining qualifications as a teacher.
I am now a fully qualified teacher holding a PGCE with QTS through the university of Coventry. I obtained this qualification through an apprentice teacher programme at the London Day School, Thomas’s. I have four years of classroom experience teaching children from ages 5 to 11. Whilst training as a primary educator, much of my time was spent in the Upper KS1 and Upper KS2 classrooms of Year 1, 2 and 5. As part of my training I taught English, Maths, Science, Art, RE, Spelling, Drama, History and Geography to each class. I was involved in all areas of school life; weekly planning, schemes of work, pedagogical training, engaging with parents and, above all, building long-term relationships with each pupil I taught. Whilst working as a 'Top Graduate' at Thomas's, I developed invaluable pedagogical tools to help find the best methods to prioritises learner's unique needs.
Head teacher at Thomas’s Fulham Annette Dobson went on to employ me as an in-house cover teacher, required to teach a range of classes from year six mathematics, to reception drama. These experiences enabled me to develop skills in time management, flexibility and pedagogy. During this time I assisted head of Drama at Thomas’s Fulham in leading the Thomas’s Players after school club, offering my skills and dramatic experience. I was also involved in aiding year six pupils prepare for entry interviews for secondary schools including Latimer and Emanuel.
Since leaving Thomas’s, I have gone on to work at a number of London’s top preparatory schools as well as many state primary schools as a supply teacher with VIBE. In the Spring term of the last academic year, I was selected to teach at Notting Hill Preparatory school through a series of rigorous interviews. It was here that I continued to develop my skill and adaptability as a teacher, developing strong relationships with the pupils and ensuring that they made progress whilst under my care. I demonstrated my ability and affinity for teaching as well as my ability to think on my feet and adapt to new environments, always putting the pupils first.
Whilst working for VIBE, I was recently chosen to tutor a seven year old boy with non-verbal ASD. During the month I taught him, I successfully adapted my pedagogical practice in how to engage a learner with complex needs. I found that my training at Thomas’s schools alongside my years of experience in the classroom both as a class teacher and supply teacher make me able to provide bespoke learning and and saw substantial progress in my time with him.
