Luca

I have recently graduated from the University of Oxford, where I studied a 4-year Engineering degree at Somerville College. Specialising in software engineering and machine learning, I was the only student in my year to undertake a project in industry while studying full time in the Master’s year of my degree. While at Oxford I played rugby for Oxford University RFC and was a committee member for the Jesus/Somerville College Ball. In my final year, I was the President of the Oxford & Cambridge Varsity Ski Trip, overseeing a budget of £2.5m and the wellbeing of 3,000 students in the French Alps.

Prior to Oxford, I attended The Skinners’ School in Tunbridge Wells, where I achieved 4 A* grades in A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English and served as Deputy Head Boy. I took part in Model UN throughout school, eventually leading our team as Head Delegate at the annual Harvard World Model United Nations conference and voluntarily coaching the next team a year later. I also enjoyed tutoring and teaching others – as a fluent Italian speaker I ran a school language club for younger students and voluntarily tutored students in STEM subjects at the weekends. I also coached an U13 rugby team and worked as a cover teacher for three months before starting my ski season.

I presently work as a Software Engineer at YUV Beauty Ltd in Clerkenwell, London. This is a continuation of my research role where I have taken on additional responsibilities such as aiding firmware changes for our YUV Lab, developed in C++, to increase dispense efficiency as well as managing the implementation of business applications for our clients to manage their data.

My teaching focus revolves around three main principles of learning, practicing and reinforcing. My tuition remains engaging through real-world applications and examples ensuring a tutee will develop a greater understanding of the subject. The first third of a lesson devoted to learning ensures a clear and concise explanation of a subject matter, and the second third introduces practical worked examples that help to practice the new learnt skills and apply them. The final third of a lesson helps reinforce learning through semi supervised work, allowing a student to build a deeper understanding of content by tackling it themselves and being guided rather than instructed.

I currently work as a software engineer at YUV Beauty, a continuation of my Master’s Research Project utilising Deep Neural Networks in a novel way. In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis or padel, or working on coding projects and video editing passion projects. My work hours are flexible and will not change for the foreseeable future: I am committed to tutoring in weekday evenings and at the weekends.
