The foundation of my teaching practice has been built on my own transformative experience of having a personal tutor at university.
I struggled to keep up with the demands of the course, and its technicalities. I was assessed and confirmed as being dyslexic, and assigned my own personal tutor, Sally, who totally 180’ed my entire university experience.
The 1:1 time spent with Sally instilled in me the confidence to see that I did have a talent for writing, I just learnt how to do it in a different way, thus I could develop alternative techniques to thrive in an environment that I found so intimidating. I wouldn't have managed to get through university if it hadn’t been for this personalised learning.
Indeed, my experiences are an additional benefit to students who have learning difficulties, where we can find mutual grounds of understanding; I will inspire students with my own story of overcoming said challenges.
My previous experience has ranged. I have shepherded interns new to the media office environment and guided them in the process of pitching and producing news piece. This involved creating constructive criticism, whilst being precise when it comes to checking for grammar, structural flow and spelling.
As a student myself, I also volunteered to be an informal reading tutor at my local primary school. A role I cherished as I would have weekly 1:1 session with children of mixed reading abilities where we would work on improving their confidence with words, comprehension and reading skills.
