Dominic

Dominic graduated with a Biochemistry degree from Imperial College, London. He is a qualified teacher (PGCE, Goldsmiths College, London) with over 12 years experience, 7 years based in schools and 9 years with Keystone Tutors.

Dominic also has a BA in 3D Design (Blacksmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery), a Masters degree from the Royal College of Art, and a BMus in Music from London College of Contemporary Music (LCCM).

Dominic trained as a Science teacher from a commitment to fostering scientific literacy towards a sustainable future, because science is amazing, and because working with young people is great fun. Dominic loves all things science. He is also a musician, currently working on a theatrical song cycle about Marie Curie and the cosmic birth of radioactive elements in neutron star collisions.

Each student learns in their own very particular way, therefore I teach each student slightly differently. I am very interested in the way our different brains manage information. I cover both arts and sciences in my own life, and enjoy working with all types of students.

My approach to teaching could be described as ‘Whatever works!’ - when whatever works is backed by peer reviewed research. I bring enthusiasm to teaching and an occasional sense of hilarity to wake students up, with a range of contextual references to make science and maths as engaging as possible.

To develop confidence I encourage tutees to feel relaxed, put aside any concerns they have about their level of ability, and aim high. Every student is different, but in science an approach that utilises visual resources, video, drawing and diagrams can get across difficult concepts and make them memorable. Where one approach falls ‘flat’ I'm quite happy to try a different angle - we will make it work.

As can be seen from my education history and range of interests, I am a very driven person with an insatiable curiosity. I like to help my students discover their own curiosity and drive.

These days when not tutoring I am developing a theatrical song cycle on Marie Curie's discovery of radium and the cosmic birth of radioactive elements in neutron star collisions. I love gardening, growing things from seed and finding varieties that will work in my particular corner of London. I'm also a gym fanatic!
