Throughout my academic career, I've embraced opportunities to share my knowledge and support students in their academic pursuits. I began teaching in Year 12 at school as a volunteer teaching assistant for Year 9 maths. In this role, I worked both within the classroom and in one-to-one settings, helping students grasp foundational mathematical concepts and working to improve their confidence.

While at university, I began tutoring regularly. Initially focusing on Maths, Physics, and Chemistry for A Level (Edexcel, OCR, AQA) and IB students, I gradually expanded my expertise to include Biology IB/A Level and university applications – from helping with personal statements, preparing for entrance exams, and preparing for interviews. I now specialise in supporting Oxbridge applicants for Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Natural Sciences. I also take on students for interview preparation, not only for Oxbridge applicants but any student who is asked to interview for other courses – often at Imperial.

Beyond test preparation, I provide ongoing support to students until their final exams, ensuring they are well-prepared for academic challenges and the admissions process. Throughout my time tutoring I have also gained some experience in tutoring maths and science at GCSE level, and providing Theory of Knowledge (for the IB) and Extended Essay (IB)/EPQ support.

I aim to continuously develop as a tutor and teacher, and actively seek feedback from students to improve my tutoring skills.

Biography

Hello! I'm Cecilia, an experienced tutor and freelance consultant. I'm French but I grew up in Brussels, attending a British primary school there. I moved to the UK for secondary school where I attended Sevenoaks School from Y7 through to U6. While there, I did the International Baccalaureate including HL Maths, Physics and Chemistry and got 45 points (inc. 7,7,7 at HL). I then went up to Cambridge, did my first year in Natural Sciences and moved to Chemical Engineering for the remainder of my degree, where I obtained a BA MEng (Hons) (class I), graduating top of my class. I'm French/English bilingual, I've been tutoring for 7 years now and I continue to enjoy tutoring alongside my freelance consultancy job.

Approach to Tutoring

I prioritise taking a flexible approach with each student and tailoring my teaching methods to their specific requirements and abilities. Depending on the student, we might prefer visual learning through diagrams, learning through Q&A style discussions or even mind maps! I work with my students to create the right tutoring for them - ensuring lessons are at the right level, at the right pace and in the right format to foster an environment for academic success.

When not tutoring

I am currently self-employed, splitting my time between tutoring and providing technical/scientific consultancy for an R&D company based in Cambridge. I generally have complete control over my own schedule, and can fit my consultancy in around my tutoring work, which means I am able to offer students daytime slots (ideal for students who want tutoring in their free periods, or students based in other time zones).

When I am not working, I am a keen martial artist, training in both Japanese and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I teach at the Cambridge University Jiu Jitsu Club. I thoroughly enjoy teaching jiu-jitsu and, although very different to teaching maths and science, many of the same principles still apply and it is a real joy to watch my students progress.
