Sophie

I grew up in London until the age of six when I moved to Lincolnshire and was introduced to life in the countryside. My formative years were spent at boarding School at Queen Margaret’s in Yorkshire, where my interest in sports and horse riding flourished. I played hockey and ran cross country for the county.

After a gap year working and traveling in South America, I studied Spanish and Business Studies at Newcastle University. From 2009-2011, I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Garden House School supporting Year 6 and Year 4. During this time, I took on various tutoring roles in London and abroad which established my passion for tutoring.

I completed my PGCE in Upper Primary in December 2011 and began working in Early Years at Eaton House the Manor (2012-2015). I helped establish the new girls’ school and ran after-school clubs including debate, lacrosse, and Spanish. I returned to Garden House School from 2016-2019 as a teacher. During the school holidays, I set up Miss Sophie’s Holiday Club, a fun holiday club for educating children in and around London through trips to museums, galleries and local sites.

In 2019 I became a full time tutor and travelled to Los Angeles to work with a client that I’ve been with ever since. I also travelled extensively with different families, setting up classrooms in unique locations such as on zoom, at beaches, on yachts, and in hotels.

Connecting with children’s passions is a fantastic way to engage them in learning. I use their individual interests and everyday life examples to create individualised lesson plans. While some children may be able to learn in a more rigid way, being creative can make the lessons more enjoyable for all types of learners. Whether this is through movement, maths manipulatives such as blocks, or through the use of games, I try to use different techniques to suit each individual child. I take pride in fostering relationships with the children so that each student feels safe and knows that I am here to guide them with their learning.

I recently married and moved to Denver, Colorado, where I live with my husband, 5-year-old step son and our Australian Mountain Doodle puppy. I still work adhoc with my long-standing client as a mentor and governess. I recently took my BASI Pilates qualification and am enjoying practicing and teaching in my home studio so I can be very flexible with tutoring hours. I enjoy the outdoors, hiking with my puppy, skiing, horse riding and travelling to Europe as much as I can.
