Mark is a warm and charismatic tutor with a passion for teaching, and inspiring young people. He held the role of 'Head of Economics' at a leading independent girls' school, for ten years, before deciding to step out of the classroom to tutor full-time.

Experience

In my twenty-year career in education I have acquired a wealth of experience.

I completed my PGCE in Secondary Maths at Bath Spa University in 2006 before I successfully taught Mathematics to all secondary ages and ability levels at an excellent comprehensive school for five years; as well as teaching Economics A Level and Statistics GCSE.

I then gained over ten years of experience as Head of Economics at a leading independent girls' school, where I inspired and empowered many students to develop a love of the subject as well as to achieve truly excellent grades (65% A*-A, 91% A*-B).

With over ten years of senior examining experience, I have significant expertise in guiding students to optimise their exam technique in order to achieve to their full potential.

I have an excellent track record of inspiring students to study Economics courses at university level, supporting them to make successful applications to Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as well as other top universities in the UK, the USA, Europe and Hong Kong.

For ten years, I also led a thriving and popular 'Academic Scholars Programme' for Gifted & Talented students. I inspired them to go beyond the curriculum, to make meaningful connections between subjects and to creatively apply their learning to current affairs.

Over time I began to work as a private tutor and found it so rewarding that I decided to leave the classroom to focus solely on tutoring. Since leaving the classroom in 2023 I have been lucky to teach many amazing students, mainly focused on Economics A Level (online), but also including fixed-term full-time home education positions in Wiltshire and Vienna.

Biography

I grew up in London where I attended Queen Elizabeth's School, achieving the highest grades in Economics, Maths and History A Levels. I achieved a First Class Honours degree in Maths, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics at Warwick University.

I worked for over two years as an Actuarial Consultant in London but felt an inner calling to work in education to inspire future generations.

I completed my PGCE in Secondary Maths at Bath Spa University in 2006 before embarking on a rewarding career in education. First I taught Mathematics, Economics and Statistics at an excellent comprehensive school for five years. I then worked for twelve years as Head of Economics at a leading independent girls' school, where I sought to build a department at the pinnacle of UK education. Alongside this, I have gained over ten years of experience as a senior examiner.

In 2023 I left the classroom to focus solely on tutoring and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work one-to-one to guide and inspire talented young people to achieve amazing things.

Approach to Tutoring

In its simplest form, my teaching philosophy is that 'if their eyes are shining, then you're doing it right'. When students are inspired, then they can achieve truly amazing things.

However, to achieve such outcomes requires a perfect mix of several vital ingredients including warmth and charisma, inspirational teaching and learning, highly-effective questioning, insightful personalised feedback, coaching to develop independence and targeting efforts strategically so that the time spent has the greatest impact on progress.

Over the course of my teaching career I have designed and refined a range of unique and valuable resources to target the key skills in Economics and strategically empower my students to perfect those skills.

I love empowering students to achieve their best in their academic endeavours, broader education and inner development.

When not tutoring

Since leaving the classroom in 2023, I have been working full-time as a private tutor. In addition to this I have taken on a fascinating variety of other flexible roles including creating content for a well-known revision webpage, consulting for edtech companies and working in senior examining roles.

When I am not working, I love spending time with my family. I have two daughters, aged 11 and 9. My wife is Spanish and we all speak both English and Spanish at home.

Furthermore, I want to live an inspired life, so I try to fill every day with things such as exciting podcasts, blogs, journalism and books. I am fascinated by practical philosophy and I love discovering new ideas.

I love being creative, whether writing about philosophy or economics, creating music or valuable teaching resources. I practise yoga and meditation most days.
