After completing my primary PGCE teacher training, I taught my NQT year at Granard School as a Year 6 teacher where my prime responsibility was SATs exam preparation and ensuring that all pupils achieved their individual targets and gained placement in their chosen secondary schools. Here, I also worked closely with the SENco, support staff and outside council bodies, where appropriate, to support the individual needs of each child.
After completing my NQT year, I moved on to teach at Thomas’s Clapham where I was a Year 2 class teacher for six years. Throughout my time at Thomas’s, I have had considerable experience working with SEND support teachers and Occupation Therapists as well as teaching and supporting children with a variety of SEND needs, including ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia and dyscalculia, as well as emotional and social difficulties, and a wide range of academic abilities.
For my final two years at Thomas’s, I also took on an additional leadership role as the Learning Lead, where I led strategic planning and curriculum innovation for my year group. Having such extensive knowledge of the KS1 Curriculum enabled me to prepare students for their journey into Key Stage 2 whether that be at Thomas’s or through the 7+exam entry. I then became the Pastoral Year Leader, a role in which I oversaw the wellbeing, pastoral care and behaviour of the 80 children in Year 2. As a Year 2 teacher, I created and taught engaging and interactive Maths, English, History, Geography, Science, Phonics and PSHE lessons which both challenged the children and ignited their curiosity. I created a safe, happy and inspiring learning environment for the children in which they could thrive, develop their own growth mindsets and achieve their academic potential.
